Conversation Piece - Monday, December 8, 2008

"Oh, come not near me, sir; I shall defile you.
I am that of your blood was taken from you
For your better health. Look no more upon't
But cast it to the ground regardlessly;
Let the common sewer take it from distinction.
Beneath the stars, upon yon meteor
Ever hung my fate, 'mongst things corruptible;
I ne'er could pluck it from him. My loathing
Was prophet to the rest, bu ne'er believed;
Mine honor fell with him, and now my life."

(The Changeling V.iii.158-67)

Hunger for Power

Volumnia seems to be using her son to fulfill her own desires of power. Instead she is forced to "gossip with the gals" while sewing. However, she seems to take this want of power to the extreme. Volumnia boasted about grandson riping apart a butterfly with his teeth! She's hungry for blood and power and her only way of thriving is by trying to get thrills out of the males in the family. Her inferior position as a woman will probably cause turmoil in her friends and family's lives because her only source of power is her influence over Martius.
